The first story is about a strike, the other two are about sport.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Do our students know that, back in the 1970\u2019s, some Irish shop assistants refused to work because their supermarket sold fruit from South Africa. Why? Because, in those years, the country was under Apartheid regime. The 12 workers, mostly young girls, were suspended. But the news reached Mandela who was a political prisoner at the time. I saw the ringleader on TV the other day. She was very emotional.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The second story is about national pride. Through the film I<i>nvictus<\/i>, a lot of you have heard about a poem written in 1875 by W.E. Henley, which was a favourite with Nelson Mandela in prison<i>. <\/i>In the 1990\u2019s sharing this poem with the Fran\u00e7ois Pienaar, the Captain of the Springboks, the first black President of South Africa inspired him to lead the rugby union team to win the World Cup. It was an exceptional victory, which helped a lot to unite a divided country. You may read the poem either in English or in Italian.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>\u201cInvictus\u201d (Unconquered, unconquerable)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"50%\">Out of the night that covers me,<br \/>\nBlack as the pit from pole to pole,<br \/>\nI thank whatever gods may be<br \/>\nFor my unconquerable soul.In the fell clutch of circumstance<br \/>\nI have not winced nor cried aloud.<br \/>\nUnder the bludgeonings of chance<br \/>\nMy head is bloody, but unbowed.Beyond this place of wrath and tears<br \/>\nLooms but the Horror of the shade,<br \/>\nAnd yet the menace of the years<br \/>\nFinds and shall find me unafraid.<\/p>\n<p>It matters not how strait the gate,<br \/>\nHow charged with punishments the scroll,<br \/>\nI am the master of my fate:<br \/>\nI am the captain of my soul.<\/td>\n<td width=\"50%\">Dal profondo della notte che mi avvolge,<br \/>\nNera come un pozzo da un polo all&#8217;altro,<br \/>\nRingrazio qualunque dio esista<br \/>\nPer la mia anima invincibile.Nella feroce morsa della circostanza<br \/>\nNon ho arretrato n\u00e9 gridato.<br \/>\nSotto i colpi d&#8217;ascia della sorte<br \/>\nIl mio capo \u00e8 sanguinante, ma non chino.Oltre questo luogo d&#8217;ira e lacrime<br \/>\nIncombe il solo Orrore delle ombre,<br \/>\nE ancora la minaccia degli anni<br \/>\nMi trova e mi trover\u00e0 senza paura.<\/p>\n<p>Non importa quanto stretto sia il passaggio,<br \/>\nQuanto piena di castighi la vita,<br \/>\nIo sono il padrone del mio destino;<br \/>\nIo sono il capitano della mia anima.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The last story did not come to me from the media but from a wonderful book I am reading at the moment in my free time: <i>Into Thin Air<\/i> by Jon Krakauer (author of <i>Into the Wild<\/i>). It is about an Everest expedition of 1996.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Quoting:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00abAnd then there were the South Africans. Sponsored by a major newspaper, the Johannesburg <i>Sunday Times<\/i>, their team had inspired effusive national pride and had received a personal blessing from President Nelson Mandela prior their departure. They were the first South African expedition ever to be granted a permit to climb Everest, a mixed \u2013race group that aspired to put the first black person on the summit. Their leader was Ian Woodall, thirty-nine [\u2026]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Woodall had recruited three of South Africa\u2019s strongest climbers to form the nucleus of his team: Andy de Klerk, Andy Hackland, and Edmund February\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Unfortunately Ian Woodall was the wrong guy. Luckily Edmund February, the black climber and his partner realized that and walked <i>out<\/i> of the mountains. The mission was aborted.
