It’s the first time he will ever have been out of the country, never mind away for two weeks at a stretch, not to mention staying with a family I have never met. I am beside myself with excitement and anxiety. I am worried about the flight (long), the weather (cold), the Rand (plummeting) and his Italian family (nicer than us).

Fourteen, on the other hand, is behaving as though he is going to the corner cafe for a cupcake. He is utterly untroubled by the prospect of being a million miles away in a country whose language he can’t speak, living with people he has never met. I’m not sure whether this is a positive reflection on our parenting or not. Either way, over the past few weeks I have forced him to have six Italian Conversation lessons, in which I hope he has learnt to say, ‘What an incredible Arrabiata! It’s almost as good as my mother’s’, and ‘We also have a canal in Cape Town – it’s called The Liesbeek’. This has got nothing to do with being competitive, it’s called patriotism.

The way this school exchange works is that ‘My Guy’, which is how Fourteen refers to his Italian counterpart, even though he has a perfectly good name, will come and stay with our family for two weeks towards the end of the year. I could probably squeeze in a couple of cookery courses between now and then, is my thinking. Not quite sure what to do about the Liesbeek though.

‘My Guy’ is 18. So there’s a four-year age gap between him and Fourteen … four years! At three in the morning, I lie awake imagining those four years have been filled either with scooters, gorgeous girls and languid cigarettes (La Dolce Vita); or horses’ heads in beds, bad weddings and exploding cars (The Godfather). ‘My Guy’ has one sister, who is three years older than he is. Or, as she explains to Fourteen when he finally gets there: ‘I was three when my mother was diagnosed with my brother’, which I think is an excellent way of putting it. Parenting is pretty much an incurable condition … alleviation of symptoms occasionally possible through regular doses of good wine.

Fourteen’s flight, which goes via Dubai, takes at least 20 years, during which I grow 50 years older, despite the wine. But finally we get an SMS.

FOURTEEN:
Plane arrived all good.
Had my first Starbucks.
Haven’t been pickpocketed.
Dubai ain’t even that hot.

ME (unerringly zoning in on the most important aspect):
What’s your mother like?

FOURTEEN:
She’s in Italy. I’m still in Dubai.

Alrighty then.
All in all, Fourteen is away for about 200 years, during which even his sister, Thirteen, starts to miss him. I can tell by the affectionate use of the word ‘Butthead’ in her texts. The house is slightly quieter and a whole lot less Axe-y. I imagine the hordes of lethal warriors he periodically slaughters in League of Legends (his computer game du jour) lying idly on their backs in the sun, chatting about this and that.

Fourteen has been back for a month already, and I still have no idea what his Italian mother is like. Never a great volunteer of information, now that he’s an International Man of Mystery, he is more schtum than ever. My plan is to grill ‘My Guy’ for all the details when he’s here at the end of the year … maybe on a little Gondola trip on the Liesbeek…

______________________________
FAIRLADY (ZA) N°929, June 2014
