by Alexandra Radu, 3A

The 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 21) was held in Paris, from 30th November to 12th December 2015.

The conference negotiated the Paris Agreement to limit the world temperature increase to 1.5°C. This result will require zero emissions some time between 2030 and 2050, according to some scientists. The Paris agreement will become legally binding if joined by at least 55 countries which together represent at least 55 percent of global greenhouse emissions.

by Jacopo Belliato, 3A

On 12 December 2015, the participating 195 countries agreed, by consensus, to the final global pact, the Paris Agreement, to reduce carbon emissions. Zero greenhouse gas emissions must be reached during the second half of the 21st century.

What is COP21?

It is the acronym for the 21st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), that is an international environmental agreement, acknowledging the existence of anthropogenic (human-induced) climate change and giving industrialized countries the major part of responsibility for combating it. The adoption of the Kyoto Protocol at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992 was a milestone in the international negotiations on tackling climate change. For the first time, binding greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets were set for industrialised countries.

Where did the conference take place?

France chaired and hosted the 21st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

When was it held?

It was held from 30th November to 11th December 2015.

How many delegates took part in the conference in Paris?

The delegates of the 195 States Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)

Why was the conference important?

The conference was crucial because the expected outcome was a new international agreement on climate change to keep global warming below 2°C.

How long did the negotiations last?

They lasted about one year. In order to reach a new universal climate agreement that is applicable to all, the delegates of the 195 States Parties have held regular meetings to make progress on the text that was voted on in Paris in December.

What was the outcome of the COP21?

The outcome was a historic international climate agreement on efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit the impacts of climate change by lowering the average rise in global temperatures to 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial times (before the English Industrial Revolution). Besides it will include monitoring and verification as well as financial and technical assistance for developing nations.

What are the three R’s of COP 21?

The 3 Rs of COP21 are:

– Reducing (consumption of resources)

– Reusing(products)

– Recycling (waste)
