In Italy football (soccer if you are in America) started in the 80s of the 19th century. The first club was “Genoa football club”.
The Italian Championship is one of the best known and important championships in Europe and in the world, together with the British, the German and the Spanish ones.
The most important Italian clubs are Juventus FC, AC Milan and Inter (which is the only club in Italy that won the Championship, the National Cup and the Champions’ League in the same season, in 2010).
Football is the most popular sport in Italy and the club that counts the highest number of supporters in Juventus FC.
In Italy there are a lot of rich people that invest lots of money on football to purchase footballers and unfortunately also to pay referees to fix matches. In fact in 2006 the scandal of football bets exploded and the FGCI (Italian federation of football game) c two scudetto (victory badge shaped like a little shield) were revoked to Juventus FC.
Italy won the World Cup four times: in 1934, in 1938, in 1982 in Spain, beating Federal Germany 3-1 and in 2006 beating France over the penalty kicks 6-4. Italy won the European Cup only once in 1968. Last summer in Ukraine and Poland they lost the final against Spain 4-0, but everybody agreed that they played very well.
