Women in Bangladesh (Princesses of Waterland)

by Farzana Mohammed 1I

The condition of many women in Bangladesh is still very poor. They don’t have any freedom. They always live a dependent life. After birth, they are dependent on their fathers. After marriage they are dependent on their husbands. There is still the practice of early marriage in some areas of the country, for example in Dinajpur, Mymensingh, Gaibandha, etc… Some fathers think that their daughters may elope with someone else, run away with someone they love. For that reason they give their consent to the girls’ marriage as early as the age of 13 to 15.

Women in Bangladesh are tortured also physically and mentally. Sometimes in the joint families the in-laws (the husband’s relatives) torture them or treat them just like servants. This situation may only be improved with modern society and a more open mentality of the people. A society is incomplete without more dignity to the women, besides behind every successful man there is always a woman So we must respect every woman and give them freedom in their own rights.

All hopes and best wishes for the success of women in Bangladesh and all over the world!
