Thanksgiving Day: «food coma»

by Elisabetta Pedrocco 4A PNI

On November 24th, every single American family is busy cooking a huge meal, and so were we here in New Jersey. I woke up, glad that it was an off school day, and grabbed the newspapers, like I do every morning; most articles were about the Thanksgiving Day “food coma”. We were going to have dinner at Grandma’s with the whole family. Everyone was going to cook something: either the dessert(s), the side dishes or the turkey; we were in charge of the turkey, the main dish. Two seven-pound turkey roasts were in the haven by 1 pm, so that they would be warm and ready for dinner.

The dinner started at 5. Italian bread and salad were on the table; the side dishes and the turkey were still in the kitchen. We waited for everyone to get there and then we started eating. The two turkeys, sweet potatoes, grilled vegetables, cranberry and apple sauce, and the stuffing, something that I had never seen before; I can’t really tell what it is in details (it’s like bread and meat mixed together), but it was pretty good. My favourite dish, however, were the sweet potatoes eaten with the cranberry sauce (it was more like a dessert than an actual dish). We ate a lot, but we still were not able to finish everything on the table. Then, we moved to the desserts: pumpkin and apple pie (my favourites), cookies, rice pudding and ice cream…a lot of stuff! After a hot cup of coffee, at 9 pm, we left and went back home with a huge amount of leftovers, which we ate the following days.
