Markets in Mestre

PFerrettoIn the town where I live, Mestre, there are three kinds of markets. One market place is near Ferretto Square and it opens every day from early morning to lunchtime. It is a food market where you can buy fruit, vegetables, meat or fish, cheese and cold or cured meats. There are four rows of permanent stalls. By the way, two stalls sell flowers. I never go shopping there because it is far from my house.
Another market is just around the food market place. It is open on Wednesday and Friday mornings. On market days lots of vans get to the town centre from early morning – rain or shine – to sell food, flowers and plants, clothes, toys, bags, shoes and so on.
This market is more colourful and noisy. Some sellers fill the pavements with forged bags or glasses.
The third kind of market is near the town hall. It opens on Saturday morning once a month. There is a painting exhibition too. It is an antique market where you can buy furniture, old dishes and old books or records. There are also ethnic stalls from Africa or India where you can buy traditional African or Indian statues, real or costume jewellery. You can bargain for things.
MercatiI sometimes go to the market because it is cheaper than shops and I think you can always find something worth buying. Anyway, my favourite markets are those on special days such as festivals like Christmas markets or traditional fairs like the Michaelmas fair. They make the quiet town square busy and full of colourful or white stalls. They are open all day long for a few weeks. It is a nice celebration!
